I tried my first cigarette at the age of 15 (actually that’s not strictly true, I was eight, but didn’t try another one until I was 15 so it doesn’t count). So, I was 15-years-old, hiding in the bushes at school trying to look cool and trying even harder not to choke or vomit. In June 2000 I attended Allen Carrs Melbourne Clinic as a pack a day smoker. I walked away that same day a “happy non-smoker” and absolutely knew for certain that I would never smoke another cigarette for the rest of my life. I was at the time 51 years of age and had been smoking on and off since the age of 21. After decades of difficult, miserable and mainly failed attempts this seemed like a miracle to me. I had tried many times to quit using all sorts of methods – cold turkey many times (every NYE, birthday month etc), acupuncture, hypnosis in a group, hypnotherapy 1 on 1, patches, gum, lozenges, Zyban, herbal cigarettes, shock treatment, the rubber band method (don’t ask!)…you name it, I tried it, but I could never seem to kick it for long at all & even if I was smoke free for a few weeks or so…I was miserable and cranky!
