Yes it's the most amazing and easy system that helped me give up smoking after 20 years, just like THAT...
Amelia Bloomfield, Editor, September 2007
- I was really quite afraid of giving up as I thought I'd 'miss' this thing that I actually quite enjoyed (or I thought I enjoyed). My boyfriend and I did it together three months ago and haven't looked back. I haven't put weight on (the first thing any girl will ask you about) and still go out partying like it's ... well, 1999... and don't have any urge to light one up. The biggest selling factor for us for the course was that yeah the book feels like it's going to work, but the course is like supersizing it and you get all the experiences of the other people there which is so varied and interesting - it's like each person in the course represents soemthing you would say to yourself or think about smoking. It's also a great selling point that you can get your money back if you start smoking within three months - you've literally got nothing to lose.
People find it hard to believe that it's so easy as you don't get withdrawals and don't feel the need to replace smoking with other addictions or habits... the course works to explain and reverse what is essentially a psychological addiction - the physical addiction to smoking is about 24 hours max and not the real hurdle. It uses some hypnotherapy at the end of the course which helps to subconsciously cement all the logical 'brain-flipping' about why you smoke that the day has provided you with.
I feel so pumped and proud of myself for giving up and was on a real high when I did it - you definitely get moments when you are looking for something to do, but not necessarily wanting a ciggie, just knowing that normally you'd be doing SOMETHING right now... oh that's right, having a cigarette. My boyfriend and I were very different in our smoking 'personalities' so it works whether you smoke loads or just socially or whether you love it or hate it.
Every smoker I"ve described it to thus has been quite inspired to try it and can't quite believe that we've done it.
Giving employees the easy way to stop smoking
Melissa Henry, October 2007
It is estimated that smoking costs Australian businesses at least $1.5 billion per year, or $4.3 million a day. On an individual level, every smoker can cost up a business up to $5,000 every year. Furthermore, the average smoker spends up to 30 minutes a day, or 14 working days a year, on cigarette breaks, and takes five days more sick leave a year on average than non-smokers.
I had been smoking for five years, up until recently, when I was presented with an opportunity to attend Allen Carr’s Easyway to Stop Smoking course – a one-day workshop based on simple cognitive therapy techniques that help smokers to realise that there are no genuine benefits to smoking.
Prior to attending the course, I felt scared and nervous; I had it in my head that I really enjoyed smoking. Attendees at the course were greeted by our facilitator, Natalie Clays – director of Allen Carr’s Easyway to Stop Smoking NSW, and an ex-smoker herself. The first thing we saw was a huge pile of cigarettes being poured out of a bag and onto the floor. At first, I was disgusted at the sight of all these cigarettes, but then I thought to myself that I have probably smoked more cigarettes than this over the past couple of years.
We were told to help ourselves to coffee and biscuits and to go and have a cigarette outside, while filling out some general paperwork, before starting the course. Upon going back into our room to start our session, we were told there will be plenty of smoke breaks. You could hear the sigh of relief from fellow soon-to-be-non-smokers.
Natalie said that throughout the day, she would be giving us instructions to follow. Two of the instructions that have stuck with me are to keep an open mind, and that anyone can be a non-smoker, no matter how long you have been smoking for. Throughout the day we were informed that we are actually addicts, similar to people who do heroin, as we are always needing that fix and constantly thinking about when we can get that next fix.
We also learned that it is fear that keeps smokers smoking. This is why those scare tactic advertisement do not work. I know myself that when I saw those ads, all I wanted to do was light-up.
By the time lunchtime came round, I was looking forward to this happier, healthier life that I was going to lead. Following lunch we had a session on withdrawals, where we were told that only 5 per cent of the withdrawals were from nicotine while the rest are in fact mental. Another smoke break followed this session. We were told to go outside and have our last cigarette, and when we came back in we were to throw our cigarette packets and lighters into the huge pile of cigarette packets.
By this stage, I was ecstatic that I was finally going to kick this dirty habit. Once we were back inside, the final session was hypnotherapy, which ran for about 15 minutes. This brought us to the end of the day, with a final debriefing before going our separate ways to start our new non-smoking lives.
I am proud to say I am going into my fifth week of being a non-smoker and I couldn’t be happier. I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to stop smoking, and to companies that want to make a difference to the lives of their employees and the bottom line. Thank you once again Natalie for helping me change my life for the better.
A smokers insight in to quitting...
Sam de Brito, May 2007
"That's the thing with smoking; if you're not mentally retarded, you know it's bad for you, you know it's slowly killing you, you know it's expensive, it stinks, it's soooo stoopid but you keep doing it and all the shock advertisements, statistics, dying relatives, sneers from non-smokers and charcoal loogies in the shower aren't going to stop you.
Why? Plain and simple because you're an addict and addicts will ignore everyone and do anything to keep their addiction in play.
I know this because I was a smoker for more than 18 years and nothing, including my dad dying of cancer, my step-dad being diagnosed with the disease, girlfriends threatening to leave me or chronic asthma could convince me to quit.
And then I picked up a book ..."

In 2005 a participant from Channel 9's Today show tried the Allen Carr program - read what she had to say.
May 2005
On World No Tobacco Day, 31st May 2005, Channel 9's Today show trialled 3 different methods of quitting; hypnotherapy, patches and Allen Carr's Easyway®.
Fiona trialled hypnotherapy and failed to stop smoking.
Matthew trialled nicotine patches and stopped using them after 3 weeks due to “some difficulties with them”. He said that even though he had stopped smoking, that he still missed cigarettes and still wanted one, particularly when he was out socialising. However, it was rumoured that Matthew may have had “the odd one”…….leave the rest unchanged.
Danielle, the third and final participant, attended the Allen Carr clinic. Here's what she had to say about it:
Danielle's testimony
Just wanted to give you some feedback from the workshop on Saturday.
I went into the workshop with an open mind, not really convinced that it would work, and I was pleasantly surprised. The workshop was great, it was interesting the way it made you think about smoking and the reasons why we smoke and the illusions of smoking. I had not read the book prior to going into the workshop and I am glad that I didn't as I did not have any pre-conceived ideas about the method.... the power of mind is something that we often forget. I was so concerned about the physical aspects of nicotine withdrawal however when Gail went through it all, it made sense that withdrawal symptoms are mental, not physical.
Gail was a fantastic facilitator, as soon as I walked into the room I felt comfortable and knew that I could believe her words, especially when she shared her story with us and told us many stories of smokers. She worked with all of us in the group session, ensuring that we all understood and that all our questions were answered. Chatting with the group throughout breaks, I would be surprised if any of them return to their 'smokers' ways.
The real test for me was Saturday evening, being out with my 'smoker' friends and at bars where I was surrounded by smokers, and you know what... I did not, nor have I, craved a cigarette since I completed the workshop. It's really quite amazing how it has worked. My friends and partner are surprised that I have not once said 'I feel like a cigarette'. Last night when I was on my own 'the monster' crept into my head and tried to tell me I felt like a cigarette, but I didn't and I went to bed. Easy!
I would recommend this workshop to any smoker that wants to Quit, and I think it's a great method. Gail was a very effective, funny and sensitive facilitator... if there is a follow up session on Today Show, I would bring her in on it, she's great!
Thanks for the opportunity to do the workshop, I think I was blessed with the best method!
Kindest regards
Danielle.
